Wakefield, Jenny McCarthy, Theater, Luncheon

  1. Science-Based Medicine » The fall of Andrew Wakefield

RT @Glinner: Possibly everything you need to know about Andrew Wakefield Excellent stuff and I DO have an autistic son! (@tru)

[ed note: "As I’ve pointed out before, I was quite happy when the British GMC told it like it is, so to speak, and found Wakefield guilty of research misconduct and in no uncertain terms called him 'irresponsible and dishonest.'"]

  2. autism – disabilityresourcelinks.com: Autistic 11 Year Old Left Alone. Starts Fire. Dies. – AGE OF AUTISM

www.lifeact.tk RT @disability reading – Autistic 11 Year Old Left Alone. Starts Fire. Dies. – AGE OF AUTISM (@life_act)

[ed note: "Managing Editor's Note: Please wake up, America. Join our reality AAP. Report on the stress and lack of support and respect, media. Autism is killing our children, shattering our families. We need support, help, treatment, respite, my God, we need respite. How long before we have to add a "RIP" category?"]

  3. Skepchick » Jenny McCarthy and Wishful Thinking

RT @hywelowen: I’m now wondering if Jenny McCarthy made up the whole autistic kid thing just to make money: #antivaxx #homeopathy (@christoclifford)

[ed note: "I dislike what Jenny McCarthy promotes and I would be thrilled if she reversed her position and actually paid attention to scientific evidence. But unfortunately I see no signs of that happening anytime soon." What I personally have difficulty with is that the strong anecdotal evidence is being shunned by those 'believing in science'. It certainly seems to me that evidence is evidence of something. Is it possible that the assumptions of the parents, scientists, and outside observers are all looking in the wrong direction? Could it be that the observations in the anecdotal evidence is accurate, but the assumptions of the meanings is what is out-of-whack?]

  4. Why do good times make my autistic child tired and grumpy?

RT @FroggyPrinceMom: Why do good times make my autistic child tired and grumpy? – (@neuroaster)

[ed note: "Of course, that still doesn't explain why, even in that moment, the good stuff ends up seeming as if it must have felt horrible."]

  5. ‘House Rules’ book review: Subplot usurps story of autistic man’s fight | – Events – NJ.com

RT @GraceBarkwell ‘House Rules’ book review: Subplot usurps story of autistic man’s fight (@Sensorystkids)

[ed note: "Unfortunately, the narration too often mimics the preachy, instructional chats common to after-school-specials about the diagnosis du jour. The murder mystery seems rickety, improvised and slap-dash, and the adult characters implausible."]

  6. Gigi Jordan: Thoughts on an Autistic Child’s Murder | Special Needs

RT @corganic: Thoughts on an Autistic Child’s Murder #autism / I could barely finish reading this story. (@glicoentrenador)

[ed note: "As one myself, I suspect this isn’t because we sympathize exactly, or all secretly harbor dark fantasies of checking into posh hotel rooms and grinding Ambien tablets into applesauce to end our sad plights. I don’t know anyone on the cusp of such a dangerous place, but I suspect the whole story evokes an image we recognize at least a little: a mother utterly alone with a child she can’t save. Or even seem to help."]

  7. Look In My Eyes for iPhone Helps Autistic Children | Touch Reviews

RT @Touch_Reviews: Tweeps please share: Look In My Eyes for iPhone helps address specific needs of Autistic Children (@ginetix)

[ed note: "The app works on a very simple premise that you complete a task and you get a reward. In this case the task in question is to look into the eyes of the children’s faces that appear on the screen."]

  8. Temple Grandin – Focus on Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome

RT @rhettpentico Temple Grandin – Focus on Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome Temple Grand… (@autismtoday)

[ed note: An hour and 12 minutes of Temple Grandin. Well worth the hour!!!]

  9. Luncheon Raises over $25K for autistic families

RT @DevelopDiscover: ACT Today! Luncheon Raises over $25K for autistic families in need (Daily Pilot) (@positveglobe)

[ed note: "As the mother of a son who's recovered from autism, my heart goes out to families who are unable to afford treatments which will help their children," says Event Producer Laura Marroquin. "It was a privilege to indirectly help by being part of this fabulous event."]

  10. Theater project welcomes autistic children – 2/28/10 – Chicago News – abc7chicago.com

RT @abc7chicago: Theater project welcomes autistic children (@Loniwillis)

[ed note: "For children, a trip to the movies, the circus, a play, is a happy, special time. However, for a child with autism who finds it difficult to sit still, keep quiet and process loud noises, these trips are usually out of the question."]
