RT @shannonrosa: When Adults Don’t Know They Have Asperger’s Syndrome: #autism #ASD (@autiemom3boys)
[ed note: "She was torn over whether to recommend her daughter be screened but felt that it was too late and that her daughter would accuse her of meddling. What are the advantages of diagnosing someone with a disability when they’ve made it into adulthood without a diagnosis? Should I encourage them to be screened or can the diagnosis harm them?"]
- Teenagers and Asperger’s Syndrome
RT @autismbuttons: Teenagers and Asperger’s Syndrome (@graca004)
[ed note: "In adolescence, communication becomes complicated, as teenagers invent words, signs, and body language to discreetly talk with a friend. For a child with Asperger's who has been struggling just to understand common social cues, this change can be frustrating and incredibly difficult to understand."]

[ed note: A comparison of symptoms about each of these conditions. "It's especially challenging for families in which one or more members experience Asperger syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder together. One way to deal with these challenges while also providing the best care and support for the patient is to seek family or individual counseling. Support groups, online communities, or professional therapies are also effective ways to learn appropriate coping strategies."]
- Autistic thinking, autism thought process, autism visual aids, autism thinking
RT @Brighttots: The average autistic child thinks in pictures. (@trishg72)
[ed note: "It is through the impression of their visual thoughts that they can either identify with a situation and words, or not comprehend. When giving instructions to a child with autism, one should avoid long sentences of verbal information. Supporting oral commands with visual cues and symbols will help the child to better grasp the request." I personally don't know the statistics about visual vs auditory vs kinesthetic thought patterns in the total population and in the ASD population. It is useful to get clear about these different thinking patterns and use them in our communication with others.]
